Dad was very touched by the display. We look forward to participating again this year.

William Goldhammer is a Korean War veteran who proudly served in the Navy from 1952-1956.

In 1956, he served on the USS Forrestal #59 which was one of the largest and fastest aircraft carriers of its time, and was the first carrier to support jet aircraft.. The ship was named after James Forrestal, Secretary of Defense who was coincidentally from Beacon, NY.

William was on the vessel’s “shake down cruise,” sailing from Virginia to Cuba and back. Their mission was making sure the carrier was ready to serve.

Because he grew up in Queens, he first learned to drive on the carrier manning fuel trucks which gassed up the aircraft. He was also a mechanic's helper.
